‘Fruit Salad’ has been a feature of Pershore High Street since 1988. Its owner, Ken Felton, has had an interesting career before taking ownership at that time. At thirteen years old, Ken became an errand boy for International stores in Pershore, becoming a full-time apprentice there after leaving school at fifteen. Only four years later he was promoted to be a manager at Newport Pagnell International. He then transferred to Tenbury Wells, followed by Ludlow and then to Evesham in 1972. During his time in Ludlow, Ken met and married his wife and soon they had two children. In 1984 he became manager in Pershore International which was taken over by Gateway in 1986. Two years later, the premises on Pershore High Street became available and Ken took the opportunity to fulfil an ambition to have his own shop. ‘ Fruit Salad’ was the result! Since that time, Ken has developed his business supplying very fresh, locally sourced foods and produce whenever possible. He has regular suppliers where he knows he can guarantee good quality products at reasonable prices.
In 1999 he was joined by his son, Paul, who is equally keen to be part of the business. Ken even had his father, at eighty years old, acting as an errand boy, delivering from his old van! From pickles, preserves and home-baked cakes to cherries, plums, asparagus and anything in season, Ken stocks it. During lockdowns he was able to offer his delivery service. Fresh fruit, vegetables, eggs etc. were delivered to doorsteps making sure his customers were provided for, while keeping them safe. Over the years Ken has kept his customers happy and they, in turn, have kept him happy. Now ‘Fruit Salad’ is set to relocate to new premises next door. It will be a bigger shop with a little revamping (also plastic free) but will continue to be a traditional fruit and vegetable shop first and foremost. Ken has no plans to retire any time soon and with Paul, equally keen to maintain the business, Pershore will continue to benefit from this well-established, customer friendly shop where all are welcome.
