Jazz News - Peter Farrall

The sad news this month is that Pershore College, our unique venue for the last fourteen years is, because of major policy changes, unable to host Pershore Jazz Festival in future. The on-site accommodation on the College campus is scheduled for occupation by migrant agricultural workers in the summer months, the College bar is no longer available, catering has been outsourced, and the field used for siting caravans and motorhomes is designated solely for sports activities.

Our inability to provide accommodation and facilities for musicians and audience as well as the security and control implications of having non-festival residents on site over the festival weekend have led to the unhappy conclusion that we are unable to present a festival in the popular accustomed format.

As for the future, Pershore Jazz will continue to provide a programme of monthly club nights, supplemented with some additional singular events during the year, with a special festival style offering at Number 8 Community Arts Centre in August. We sincerely hope that at least some fans will still be able to enjoy the broad spectrum of bands for which Pershore Jazz is well known.

The club is going strongly with a full capacity audience each month since reopening at Pershore Town football club in September and the trend is continued in December when we have a waiting list to see Alan Barnes and Dave Newton, a duo whose reputation for anecdotal humour and witty on stage banter is coupled with a solid performance of jazz styling from Louis Armstrong to Chick Corea and everything in between.

Next year’s programme promises an abundance of diverse artists, line ups and styles to suit all jazz tastes, beginning in January with the Ralph Allin Quartet. We can rely on Ralph to hold the audience spellbound with the versatility and imagination coming from his trademark electric “skeleton” violin. .
