Harold Wilson - 100 years old

Harold Wilson will be 100 years old on the 9th February 2021 and we wish him a very Happy Birthday!

Harold left school when he was  fourteen years old and in 1939 Harold enlisted into the Scottish Yeomanry at the age of  eighteen, where he served in the UK at Catterick, Leeds, Whitby and Brighton before Harold married Jean in 1942.  In 1943 Harold moved to Aldershot and then later in 1944 to Portsmouth pending the D-Day landings in Normandy.  Harold took part in Op Bluecoat, Goodwood and Epson during the allied assault in Normandy.  Whilst taking part in Op. Goodwood; Harold's tank was struck by a shell and both the Gunner and Radio Operator were sadly killed. They were both twenty-one years of age.  A third of the tanks were lost in this battle.  The British tanks were known as 'Tommie Cookers' by the Germans since they burned easily when hit.  It was generally accepted that it took four Sherman tanks to destroy a German tiger tank and of those four Sherman's, you could reckon on losing three!

Harold was involved in the Battle of the Bulge in a Comet tank in December 1944 and January 1945, a fact not readily known was that the British were involved in the Battle of the Bulge.  In April/May 1945 Harold was helping to liberate Holland and was awarded the following medals:  - - -

- General Service Medal
- France/German Star
- Defence Medal
- Victory Medal
- Legion D'Honneur
