We've all heard of public relations, or at least have some awareness of what PR works to achieve. However, with so many people taking away individual interpretations, it's a term that is often misunderstood. As such, there can be confusion about PR and its purpose, often leading to businesses making mistakes when trying to reach out to target audiences.

One of the most common misconceptions is that the PR simply means press release, yet the role of a PR professional is an extremely varied one. From creating ideas and overseeing all creative aspects of a campaign to launching events and community, a press release isn't the only service available under public relations.

In addition, PR isn't just a free alternative to other forms of marketing and advertising. While all three services do have some cross over, they have different goals, and can all incorporate various kinds of earned and paid media. PR's goal is to improve relations with your audiences, while marketing and advertising are both more focused on selling.

We've all heard of the saying "There's no such thing as bad publicity"; however, this is one of the worst pieces of PR advice you could receive. While a crisis will definitely get people talking, the outcome won't be positive. By being slandered and setting that negative impression, people won't trust your brand or want to buy from you.

Focus instead on connecting with your specific target audience, sharing messaging that's on brand and useful for your penitential consumers.
